The trio of Erik Griswold (Brisbane), Helen Svoboda (Melbourne) and Chloe Kim (Sydney), Anatomical Heart first came together in the remote bush property of Harrigans Lane, northern New South Wales, to fuse their highly individualistic voices into a common language. The juxtaposition of Erik's John Cage-inflected prepared piano, Helen's Nordic-tinged bass, and Chloe's highly intense but precise drumming found conversational fluency in the remoteness of the Australian bush.

"During one week in April 2023, we sequestered ourselves in the forest at Harrigans Lane (home of the Piano Mill). Each day we recorded free improvisations in the secluded Lagavulin chamber music hall, and then later listened back, discussed and brainstormed ideas to try in the next session. We took bushwalks and explored the region (which has five national parks), inspired by spectacular granite formations, melodious birdsong, some very chilled out wallabies who loved to graze in the lawn outside, and one troublesome mouse.

Towards the end of the week, we started to distill hours of recordings into the eight tracks presented here. As each soundworld slowly came into focus, a few themes emerged: short catchy tunes (Anatomical blues, Wallaby), deep pulsating grooves (Rock song, Tremble part 2), glitchy free rhythmic textures (The mouse, Ripples) and devastated romance (Heart strings, Bowed). Each piece represents a crystallized, essence of each musical idea, becoming a springboard for further elaboration in live performance." - AH
